Academic Scholarships Specific to the Biology Department

Lewis E. Aldrich, Jr. Ph.D. Endowed Biology Scholarship

The Lewis E. Aldrich, Jr. Ph.D. Endowed Biology Scholarship was created by a gift from the estate of Lewis E. Aldrich, Jr., Class of 1950, in memory of his parents, Lewis and Edna Burnside-Aldrich and of Dr. Aldrich’s McMinnville “parents,” Harry and Louisa Alvis. The scholarship is available to junior and senior students majoring in biology who have a minimum 3.50 GPA, with preference given to students from Eastern Oregon.

The John L. Boling Memorial Fund

An endowed scholarship established in the name of the late ÃÛѨÊÓƵ biology professor by friends, colleagues, and former students, this scholarship is awarded annually with preference is given to a biology major demonstrating financial need.

The Builders’ Scholarship Fund

Created by donations from the contractors who built Murdock Hall, this fund’s proceeds are awarded as scholarships to deserving biology and chemistry majors.

The Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Endowed Scholarship Fund was created by Dr. Dirks-Edmunds. The scholarship provides support to a student of demonstrated ability and financial need. It is awarded to students majoring in biology with preference given to those concentrating on environmental issues. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds, Class of 1937, served as a faculty member in biology at the college from 1941-1974 and retired as professor emeritus.

The Lydia C. and Peter B. Dirks Memorial Scholarship

The Lydia C. and Peter B. Dirks Memorial Scholarship was created by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds, Class of 1937, in memory of her parents. The scholarship provides support for students majoring in, or planning to major in, biological sciences. It is awarded to students with good academic records and demonstrated financial need. Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds ’37 served as a faculty member in biology at the college from 1941-1974 and retired as professor emeritus.

The Royce Keller Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship in memory of Royce Keller, who served as administrative assistant to the president of ÃÛѨÊÓƵ and was known and loved by faculty, staff, and students, was established by her husband, Stuart Keller, and friends. It is awarded annually to an academically able student planning to go into the field of medicine and biology.

Scholarships for biology, chemistry or physics majors

Kerry and Kristie Carmody Endowed Scholarship

The Fund was established in 2008 by Kerry and Kristie Carmody, both Class of 1973. The Fund provides assistance to students with demonstrated financial need who major in one of the sciences: chemistry, biology or physics.

The Robert C. McHarness Natural Science Student Research Fund

This fund is named for Robert McHarness, ÃÛѨÊÓƵ Class of 1928. He spent all of his career with the DuPont Company, where he was a co-inventor of the process for the manufacture of Teflon. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from ÃÛѨÊÓƵ in 1982. This perpetual fund was made possible by his widow, Helen H. McHarness, Class of 1929. Income is used annually to provide research stipends for students majoring in the natural sciences. Stipends allow students to work on research projects with faculty members. Projects may occur during the summer or the regular academic year. The department chairs in biology, chemistry, or physics select recipients.
