Major in Global and Cultural Studies:

French and Francophone Studies

The contributions of French-speaking cultures stretch across the globe, especially in the areas of food culture, fashion, theater, the visual arts, cinema and architecture. As a French and Francophone studies major at ÃÛѨÊÓƵ, you will acquire the skills you need to communicate effectively with people and ideas throughout the Francophone world. Immerse yourself in one-on-one conversations with our assistant from France, join the French Club and study abroad at one of our sites in France in Angers, Aix-en-Provence, or Bourgogne.

you might take:

French Culture and Free Expression

Fine-tune your linguistic skills and reach conversation-level French. (GLFR 202)

Introduction to African Cinema

Analyze North African and Sub-Saharan films through active class discussion, group presentations, and participation in Portland’s African Film Festival. (GLFA 215)

French Civilization II

Discover aspects of French history and culture from 1789 to the present: the structure of French society, its institutions, and its values. (GLFR 312)

Learning Outcomes

    Critically analyze through cultural products such as film, literature and other media, cultural practices and historical contexts that have shaped the target culture.

    Develop a broad interdisciplinary approach and generate informed perspectives, insights and/or appreciations to various cultural products, such as films, literature and media from the target culture.

Internship opportunities

Attending classes is only part of the language-learning experience. Internships give you the opportunity to communicate in your target language or interact with people from those cultures. Internships are also a great way to explore other interests and develop transferable skills.
