Dr. Bestwick’s research interests focus on the basic science of mitochondrial processes. She is particularly interested in how the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes coordinate transcription, as well as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the organelle via electron transport chain protein complexes using yeast as a model organism. Dr. Bestwick’s lab uses a combination of protein biochemistry, yeast genetics, and analytical techniques to pursue specific questions related to these topics. She has an active research program centered on undergraduate student participation and learning, and has had several National Science Foundation (NSF) and private foundation grants to support her work. Dr. Bestwick typically teaches CHEM 400: Biochemistry, CHEM 340: Instrumental Methods of Analysis, and introductory chemistry courses.
